Foglight Agent Manager Development Kit

Foglight agents require the Foglight Agent Manager (FglAM) to manage their life-cycles and centralize communications with the Foglight Management Server.

The Agent Manager Development Kit enables developers to create and manage custom Foglight agents.

These Release Notes cover the resolved issues, known issues, workarounds, and other important information about the 5.8.5.8 release of the Agent Manager Development Kit. Review all sections before starting the installation.

FAM-6374

The OS and ARCH detection code in the SSH local and SSH Ganymed connection classes was not complete and could misidentify solaris-sparc64 as solaris-sparc.

FAM-6634 WindowsEventLogRecord objects stored event log record numbers as integers instead of long integers.
FAM-5448 ICMP helper application could not receive ICMP TTL Exceeded messages on Windows Vista/7/Server 2K8R2 causing traceoute commands to be broken.

The 5.8.5.2 and 5.8.5.1 releases of the Foglight Agent Manager Development Kit did not include any resolved issues. These releases were made to accompany the related Foglight Management Server releases.

FAM-6406

The Agent Manager Development Kit, Branding Development Kit, and Agent Harness lib directories are restructured in this release. In the Agent Manager Development Kit, all public API classes are contained in the glueapi.jar file, found in the Development Kit lib directory. All other JAR files in the Development Kit are private and as such are not available to agents at runtime. Agents that require other JAR files must explicitly include their own copies of these JAR files.

FAM-6032

The support for building out of process (OOP) agent packages is removed from the Agent Manager Development Kit in this release. Agents defined in older cartridge builds can still be to be deployed as OOP agents, but it is no longer possible to create or upgrade OOP agents with this Development Kit.

FAM-4493

The VerifiedSubmission interface did not accept callbacks to notify for status changes.

FAM-3258

Internal mock framework that was available in previous releases of the Agent Manager Development Kit is no longer included. There are existing mock frameworks such as Mockito and jMock that can be used to write better performing tests. The use of this tools is documented in the Development Kit.

Adding additional agent instances of the same type can cause a null pointer exception as a result of a call to the JTree.updateUI().

The ASP string editor in the Agent harness interprets "\n" as a new line.

FAM-3775

Setting a label on an enum type property in the agent-definition.xml can cause a fatal error.

The Agent harness cannot write some configuration files to the state directory.

A core dump occurs while generating a heap dump from the Agent Harness menu on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x OS virtual machine

This release of the Foglight Agent Manager Development Kit does not include any third party known issues.

 


Upgrade and compatibility

The 5.8.5.8 Foglight Agent Manager cartridge requires Foglight Management Server 5.7.5.5 or later. The cartridge is compatible with all previously released versions of the Agent Manager client application.

Agent Manager upgrades from a 5.5.4.x legacy release require an intermediary upgrade to 5.6.7 prior to upgrading to 5.8.5 or later. To complete this intermediary upgrade, install one or more of the Agent Manager 5.6.7 platform-specific cartridges (as required), and upgrade the legacy hosts to this release before deploying the 5.8.5.8 Agent Manager cartridge or upgrading the Foglight Management Server to version 5.7.5.8. After all of the legacy hosts are running version 5.6.7, and the Foglight Management Server is upgraded to version 5.7.5.5 or later, you can start upgrading your hosts to version 5.8.5.8.

System requirements

Final platform support notice

The following operating system is not supported as of version 5.8.5.8:

Support for the following operating systems will be discontinued in an upcoming Foglight release. This platform is supported in this release. We hope this notice of planned support changes helps you plan your upgrades.

Product licensing

Foglight includes a licensing capability that restricts access to those features that are defined in the license. Any Management Server installation requires a license that grants access to server-specific parts of the browser interface and the features associated with them. Foglight cartridges are also license-protected. While some cartridges are covered by the base Foglight license (such as Foglight Agent Manager cartridges and the Cartridge for Infrastructure), others may require an additional license. Foglight Infrastructure Utilities are covered by the base Foglight license.

To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:

  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Setup > Manage Licenses.
  2. Click Install.
  3. In the Install License dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the file browser that appears, specify the location of the license file.
  5. In the Install License dialog box, click Install License.

Globalization

This release is Unicode-enabled and supports any character set. In this release, all product components should be configured to use the same or compatible character encodings and should be installed to use the same locale and regional options. This release is targeted to support operations in the following regions: North America, Western Europe, and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Far-East Asia, Japan.

This release has the following known capabilities or limitations: The Management Server and Agent Manager client will be enabled for Global Operations, but not localized to any particular locale. Legacy Foglight 4 agents will continue to be limited to the locales supported under Foglight 4. Consult the Global Operations statement for each agent to determine its own capabilities and limitations. The Agent Manager currently requires installation in a directory path with only ASCII characters.
