Welcome to Foglight for SNMP

Foglight for SNMP extends Foglight for Infrastructure by introducing the ability to monitor a broader set of hosts and devices that the Infrastructure agent does not currently support. Foglight for SNMP supports SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3. Use Foglight for SNMP to:

SNMP Discovery on Linux

Foglight for SNMP running on Linux requires that you allow Foglight Agent Manager root or administrator access to start the Agent Manager’s ICMPService. Perform one of the following in this order of preference.

Known Issue

SNCAR-837 In a Foglight Federation environment where there are several Federated Child Servers connected to a single Federation Master Server, the SNMP property configurations (ASPs) on the Child Servers are not kept synchronized.
SNCAR-813 For Solaris and Linux hosts, the SNMP agent is unable to detect if the host is also being monitored by an Infrastructure agent.
SNCAR-802 The SNMP Hosts discovery button is not hidden when a server is a Federation Master.
SNCAR-94 This release of Foglight for SNMP does not support use on Management Servers with more than one active Foglight Agent Manager (FglAM) instance connected.
If there are multiple Agent Manager instances connected, you must shut down all instances except the one to which you want to deploy SNMP.

System Requirements

Before installing Foglight for SNMP, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

Foglight for Infrastructure

Foglight for Infrastructure 5.8.5 must be installed.

Operating System

Foglight for SNMP can be installed on any supported Foglight Management Server configuration for Foglight version 5.7.0 or later.

Platform, Memory, and Hard Disk Space

The platform, memory, and hard disk space requirments for the monitored servers must match the Agent Manager requirements. For complete information, see the Foglight System Requirements and Platform Support Guide.

 

 


Product Licensing

Foglight includes a licensing capability that restricts access to those features that are defined in the license. Any Management Server installation requires a license that grants access to server-specific parts of the browser interface and the features associated with them. Foglight cartridges are also license-protected. While some cartridges are covered by the base Foglight license (such as Foglight Agent Manager cartridges and the Cartridge for Infrastructure), others may require an additional license. This cartidge is covered by the base Foglight license.

 

To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:
  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Setup & Support > Manage Licenses.
  2. Click Install.
  3. In the Install License dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the file browser that appears, specify the location of the license file.
  5. In the Install License dialog box, click Install License.

Installation Instructions

Before beginning the installation process, ensure Foglight for Infrastructure 5.8.5 is installed.

Foglight for SNMP is distributed as a .car file: SNMPCartridge-5_8_5.car. Use the Administration > Cartridges > Cartridge Inventory dashboard to install the SNMPCartridge-5_8_5.car cartridge and all the sub-cartridges within it. For full installation instructions, refer to the topic "Installing Foglight Cartridges" in the Foglight Administration and Configuration Help.

During the installation process, the SNMP agent package is automatically deployed and agent instances are created. Once the SNMP cartridge installation process is completed you can immediately perform SNMP discovery and monitoring.
